Quarries’ ParkVedelago (Tv), 2008

The location is concentrated in the vicinity of Vedalago’s urban centre, a town of approximately 17.000 inhabitants situated to the east of the city of Treviso and represented by three large underground gravel quarries. The localisation is strategic because it is inserted into a system of residential housing and areas of high environmental and architectonic value. (the River Sile with its national park and the Venetian Villas with their historical parks).

The project is defined by assuming its role as a new urban centrality, by taking on the role as part of the town due to its vicinity and proposing itself for an investiture that will make it become a place of memory (an afterthought of the quarry) and of re-invention (new and future uses of the excavated space). All this using a basic strategy which in turn is its strength: the co-existence of work spaces (the excavation works that continue to happen) and spaces for town life (where the excavation has been terminated). The programming of the interventions allows for the immediate launch of a re-appropriation action of the excavated land: it immediately starts to take shape as a re-invention of the quarry’s landscape. Successively, while maintaining the quarry plant active, regards the realisation of the first functional works of recomposition, superficial excavations with land modelling and environmental recomposition interventions.

The final asset will be reached with the end of the excavation works and the consequent elimination of the technical plant installation.
The functions foreseen are subdivided into several centres of activity: the commercial area, offices, reception areas, sports and leisure areas with equipped park, swimming pool, beach; exhibition centre, museum; lightly equipped park.

The actions foreseen are: connect, bend, model, empty, add, detach. Each of these corresponds to a re-interpretation of the ground, land, water or cultivated fields in their reciprocal relationship with the ‘forms’ of the new activities inserted.

It has been chosen to to simplify the way with which to intervene in these locations, reducing them to simple actions more suited and pertinent to the architectural theme of the landscape. A willingness that finds support in the works to do in that the action of re-invention is entrusted to the Quarry operator.
